Harvard community meetup

Since Harvard Drupal developers are planning to get together at some point during DrupalCon, I thought I’d start this thread so we have a place to plan and discuss.

Does anyone have any days/times they would like to do this, or conversely, would not want or be able to meet? I can try to find a time that is agreeable to most people.

I’m thinking probably a lunch or a happy hour, or maybe both?

Would it be more helpful to meet early in the conference, or at the end to swap ideas and compare notes?

Meet Monday?

I’m pretty open to meeting times, but I favor Monday lunch and/or happy hour to share leads on what the conference has to offer. (I’m not done reviewing the program.)

Meet Monday!

I vote for Monday lunch:

  • It will be nice to know some people for the rest of the conference
  • I can’t do happy hour and I have to go to Cambridge Tuesday
  • We can always decide to meet again later
  • Ditto to Andrew’s thoughts on sharing leads

2 meetings??

I’m thinking 2 meetings might be good:

1) lunch on Monday to share leads at the start of the conference

2) happy hour on Thursday to a) swap stories and b) maybe plan how to bring some of our newfound wisdom back to folks at Harvard who couldn’t make it (I’ve been contacted by some of those people). I propose the nearby Lucky’s as a venue…a funny little below-ground cave of a place with a rat pack theme.

Thoughts?

For the lunch, in terms of where to meet, I’m at a loss. We have the vouchers for lunch in the food court of the convention center, but I’m unsure how to find each other in what will surely be a crowd. Does anyone know any landmarks inside the convention center?? I looked at going to outside restaurants (some good ones in Fort Point), but I don’t think we’ll have time to do that with just the hour we get.

Anyone want to volunteer to wear something ridiculous that we can all look for? Oversized sombrero with a Harvard shield on it?

I suppose I could just bring a piece of paper that says Harvard really big and stick it on the table, and people can find us.

I like the 2 meeting idea

Since my husband has agreed to be on baby duty for the conference, I want to take full advantage of any cocktail opportunities at my disposal. I know I am going to mostly be hitting the site building and user experience tracks. But it would be great to know who is going to be focusing on the others so that we can share info later.

I have absolutely no knowledge of that convention center. If it were in Back Bay, that would be a different story.

Maybe bring the sombrero, but just put it on the table instead of wearing it. ;0) Uploading a photo here would help too I think.

Place to meet for Monday lunch

I have to imagine they’ll have wifi at the conference, and probably most of us have laptops. If someone can investigate the food court before the first tutorial and post a good meeting location, then we should be set.

Monday meeting

Is it going to be a piece of paper with Harvard on it? Food court?

ninja training slides - monday 9am talk

(Andrew suggested posting this, so it’s his fault if you feel spammed.)

Btw, this was a pretty good talk, with lots of tips and links to docs and tools. It was focused on development of new modules, however: he mentioned a number of tools, such as phpmyadmin, that should not go on a production server.

Monday lunch location decided

We’re meeting by the Sandwich Co. at the food court, near the glass wall. Camille and I will definitely be there, looking pretty much like our profile photos. (Maybe we’ll strike the exact same poses…)

sorry I missed you at lunch yesterday

Sorry I missed lunch, but I did catch up with Camille later on. Just a thought about maybe trying to have lunch together tomorrow. I received a flyer when I came in that they have a free shuttle service to area restaurants that is supposed to get you there and back in an hour. Maybe we should try that? I brought my lunch today, so if you all try to congregate somewhere, post it and I’ll try to find you. Or I can hold down a table, since I won’t be braving the lines?

Maybe once my second cup of coffee kicks in….I’ll think of a place I can park myself at lunch if you want to find me.

Lunch at AIIM near Oracle

If anyone wants to meet on the expo floor of the AIIM conference, I’ll have lunch in the food court near the Oracle booth. I won’t hang around the food area too long, I’m going to be looking at the expo.

Lunch

I’m going to be parking myself near the escalators by the bridge and the restrooms at lunch. Someplace where I can look out the windows.

I vote for the shuttle bus idea Kristin mentioned (for Wed?)

Might be fun to compare notes on the Con thus far..

I have a proposal...Trolly route C?

If you all want to try and do the lunch trolley…I’m kinda partial to the offerings on Trolley Route C. Since we are on the waterfront, it’s got me wanting seafood. The choices are:

Anthony’s Pier
Aura
Barking Crab
The Daily Catch
Lucky’s lounge
No Name Restaurant
Seaport Bar and Grille
Legal’s test kitchen.

I don’t know these restaurants very well, except for what I’ve heard, so if someone with more experience has wants to suggest one of these or anything else for that matter, I’m fine with that.

As an FYI, the MySQL keynote just before lunch doesn’t hold a ton of interest to me, so if others feel likewise, it might be nice to sneak out a little early, then we could get an hour and a half for lunch.

Again…just a thought.

Monday lunch recap

For those who weren’t at Monday’s meetup, we said a few things:

  • It would be nice to get some standard “Crimson themes”. I say the more the merrier, so I’d encourage anyone with a design clue (i.e., not me) to build a draft and share it. Maureen Lyons may have a head start here.
  • Several med school folks admitted to having almost a year’s experience with Drupal, which is more than many of us have.
** Anybody want to post some links?
    ** abcd-www talk?
  • Spreading the word
** It would be great to get more PIs standardizing on a platform.
    ** Hey, how about Drupal?!
** But there’s no way we can coerce them.
** How about gentle encouragement instead? If we can deliver a top node of a compliant website in a day for free, it might convince PIs not to hire a freelancer to build an ugly, non-compliant site. (Deborah reminded us that many grants require accessibility for fundees websites.)
  • We agreed that it would be a good idea to post things we learned from the con.
    ** Post here? Somewhere else?
  • Those posts could be used to seed a discussion of ideas for Drupal@Harvard
    ** abcd-www monthly meeting?
    ** abcd-www non-monthly meeting?
  • Hey, what do you know? Markdown doesn’t do nested lists!

Btw, I will be attending MySQL and won’t head out to the pier for food (because I’m a religious fanatic). But please post your Thursday lunch plans in this space.

lunch

I’m up for lunch on Wednesday, and for sneaking off a lil’ early from the keynote, too. What about leaving at 12:00? Too early?

Seafood sounds good. I worked over in Fort Point for a while, so I’ll say what I know. No Name Restaurant is walkable. No frills old school sort of place with a selection of fried and broiled seafood, very inexpensive for seafood. I just heard about a place called Yankee Lobster Fish Market (300 Northern Ave), down the end of the waterfront away from downtown. Supposed to be a very good fish & chips, lobster roll type of place. Maybe a bit of a trot for us since the trolley doesn’t stop there, though.

Anthony’s looks good, but maybe rather spendy?

Daily Catch is Italian seafood…the North End location is well liked.

Lucky’s has sort of an upscale comfort food menu.

One other option would be Flour bakery for sandwiches. About a 10 minute walk from the convention center, or we could catch the trolley to one of the restaurants that’s nearby Flour and walk.

There’s also a great place called Channel Cafe on Summer st (pasta, quiche, sandwiches, great cookies, lots of vegetarian options) but it can be a bit slow, so unless we have the hour and a half, we should go elsewhere.

If people would pipe up on their preferences, we can pick a place.

If all else fails, let’s plan to meet in the hallway by the break room at the conference. If some folks want to stay for the whole keynote, maybe we can arrange to meet at the restaurant.

Sounds good to me..

All sounds good to me.. Perhaps touch base by the Break Room just before the keynote? Might be more difficult to make on-the-fly decisions during.. (especially given the sluggishness of this site…)

Wednesday lunch plans

I’ll find you by the breakroom around 12ish. I’m personally kinda sandwiched out, and I do have to say that I have a craving for seafood, but I might be alone in that craving and will eat just about anything. So if there are vegetarians out there or people who just really don’t like seafood, I’m not particular. I have a sense of adventure when it comes to food.

which one might be better for conversation? That could help in the decision factor. I’m also not opposed to something a “little” more spendy. I haven’t spent a lot here and feel like I deserve at least one good lunch while I’m here.

I was also thinking if anyone wanted to get together f~KCor a post last-session-of-the-day cocktail. The bar downstairs at the Westin seems decent enough.

Daily Catch

Let’s plan on Daily Catch (at the courthouse) then…seafood, mid-range prices.

We’ll meet at 12:00 at the breakroom to head over. (I’m definitely more anxious to get back for the Security talk at 1:30 than to catch all the keynote.)

Security isn't at 1:30

Sorry. Security was rescheduled for 9:00 this morning. GIS is at 1:30 instead.

I’m bummed too.

But maybe you can enjoy the seafood more.
