Session Description: 

SESSION OVERVIEW
Summer of Code 2008 was just announced. Hooray! Since most of the smartest people in Drupal will be at Drupalcon, let’s find a corner to meet for an hour to get on the same page so we can make this program a shining success. :)

AGENDA
* Compile list of folks interested in mentoring, and if so, in what areas
* Brainstorm some SoC project proposals for students to claim
* Identify holes in our getting started documentation
* Discuss strategies for managing students/mentors/projects
* Prepare SoC mentor organization application

GOALS
We’ll try and come away with a few solid project proposal ideas, as well as some overall strategy for better management of SoC this year.

Hi Angie,

Posting the link to the excellent Google Mentors’ session where Sigurd gave tips on how to manage students and mentors: GSoC notes. I believe these are your notes :)

Excerpts:

Community participation

  • Get them involved in choices
  • Frequent public communication
  • Introduce students early on to the community
  • Get them on the community resources (IRC, mailing lists…)

Tools

  • Give them a blog on the project blog.
  • Add public wiki repository
  • Common mailing list
  • Regular reports through IRC, etc.
  • Treat them like any other developer
  • Public discussions
  • Have well-defined review process.
  • Give them rights equal to others on the project.
  • Mentoring program
