Gary Kebbel joined Knight Foundation in January 2006 as a journalism program officer. He concentrates on grant-making in the new media area and is administering Knight Foundation’s $25 million News Challenge to strengthen community news and community life. Through this progam, significant sums are continuing to be granted to Drupal developers.

Gary was the news director at America Online for six years, where he headed the team that built AOL News into one of the world’s largest online news sites.

He is a Fulbright Senior Specialist in online journalism. During September 2007 he was awarded a Fulbright grant to teach journalism in South Africa. (Travel blog: http://www.kebbel.org)

Gary helped create USAToday.com and Newsweek.com, and was a home page editor at washingtonpost.com. His journalism career began in newspapers. He also worked on the web site of Education Week newspaper, where he was in charge of content development, strategy and planning.

He has served as the graphics editor at USA Today; taught online journalism as an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism, and taught the use of new media in public diplomacy at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute.
